But his record caused long delays as seven other judicial nominees won Senate approval before this week's vote on Hamilton. In April, Senate Republicans on the Judiciary Committee boycotted the hearing on Hamilton's nomination to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 7th Circuit.

In a recent speech to the Federalist Society, Senator Sessions quoted Hamilton as saying a judge's job is to "write footnotes to the Constitution."
